Don’t Let Pests Ruin Your Easter Fun!
Enjoy Easter – Avoid Pests
Easter is always a fun sign of spring. The weather is getting warmer, flowers and blooming and… unfortunately, pests are also coming out of hiding. With this increase in pest activity, we want to be sure that pests don’t ruin your Easter fun this weekend. In this blog, we go over a few tips and tricks to keep insects from spoiling Easter celebrations.
Steer Clear of Stinging Pests
During this time of year wasps, hornets, yellow jackets, and bees are all looking for a place to build their nests. Unfortunately, this can mean that they are extra territorial, trying to protect their new home, their queen, and the eggs that are about to hatch and become next generation of their colony. As such, some of these stinging pests can become aggressive if you simply get within close proximity to their hive. Even relatively docile hornets and bees can attack if they think their hive is in danger. As such, it is highly advisable to check your yard and make sure no nests around the area that your kids will be hunting for Easter eggs. If you do happen to find a nest, try to avoid getting close and make sure to call us right away so that the nest can be removed safely.
Ant-agonizing Ants
Ants are avid scavengers with a particular preference for sugary foods. When a single ant locates a source of sustenance, they leave behind invisible trails that lead their fellow ants right to the same source. Unfortunately, this can become somewhat problematic for Easter egg hunts. Whether your family hides colored hard boiled eggs, chocolate eggs, plastic eggs filled with goodies, or just plain candy, they can all act like a beacon to your local populations of ants. The last thing you want is for your child to reach down in excitement to collect their prize only to hear a loud scream as they suddenly realize it, and now their hand, is covered in hungry ants. Luckily, there are just a few steps you can take to easily avoid this kind of situation. The most important thing is to not set up the egg hunt too in advance. If the sweets are out in the yard for a few hours, you are far more likely to encounter an ant problem. Even still, ants are hard to avoid completely outdoors… but by being a bit extra observant when selecting the placement of the eggs, you can increase your chances of avoiding them. Simply gaze over the area quickly to be sure you’re not seeing several ants crawling around and that there are no visible ant hills anywhere nearby.
Easter Travel and Pest Control
If you are planning to travel this Easter weekend, it’s important to be aware of the greatest traveling pests: bed bugs. Bed bugs are tiny parasitic insects that are experts at both hitchhiking and staying hidden. More often than not, the biggest risk for vacationers ending up with bed bugs are hotel rooms. Both hotels and motels have become hubs for passing bed bugs because they can simply crawl in and out of luggage, hitchhiking around to homes throughout the US. To help protect yourself, make sure you inspect your room carefully, even using a flashlight if possible as bedbugs will try to hide in dark areas. Some of the key areas to look include the creases of the mattress (underneath the fitted sheet), the crease between the headboard and mattress, and the cracks and corners inside drawers or closets.
Easter Clean Up
After all that Easter fun, you want to be sure you’re not leaving some fun behind for pests. Check your yard to be sure there aren’t any remaining eggs or candy that could end up attracting pests right to your home. It can also be beneficial to check all of your doors and windows to make sure that none of your family members or guests have accidentally left any of these entry points open. This quick clean-up check will ensure that your Easter celebration won’t turn into any pest problems.
Happy Easter!
