Dangers of Stinging Pests

Stinging pests are members of the Vespidae family, which is part of the Hymenoptera order. The Vespidae family encompasses roughly 30,000 different species of wasps including paper wasps, yellow jackets, and hornets. Many species within this order are known for their aggressive and territorial natures and can both bite and sting their victims’.

Not only are swarms dangerous, but even a single sting could potentially be fatal to someone who is allergic, and some at home treatments for wasps can be equally dangerous. Paper Wasps

Paper wasp nests tend to be small, only about the size of a baseball to a softball, and are commonly constructed under decks, or on the eaves of a home. They are shaped like umbrellas with hexagonal cells facing downward and sometimes have colony members resting inside the cells. Due to their smaller size and minimal number of colony members, wasps are one of the easier stinging pests to treat. After a quick fogging of the nest, your technician will knock down the nest and smash it to ensure that any eggs or larvae inside do not survive. Then, the destroyed nest is taken away in a sealed garbage bag.

 

 

 

 

Yellow Jackets

Treating yellow jackets is a tricker undertaking due to the location of their nests. These pests burrow into the ground or slip into cracks in the outer walls of homes to build their nests inside these other structures, creating hidden hives. To tackle these nests, your technicians will apply one of two different kinds of pesticides: Tempo Dust or Tri-Die. Tempo Dust is a kind of insecticide in dust form which can be poured into the openings of ground-based yellow jacket nests. But for more precise and targeted treatment along walls or in more difficult to reach areas, Tri-Die will be used. It comes as an aerosol which can be sprayed directionally and almost instantly dries into a dust upon contact. These applications both flush out the nests and exterminate the inhabitants, ending the infestation.

Hornets

Out of all stinging pests, hornets are the most dangerous to treat. Their nests are particularly large, often resembling a large brownish-grey football or basketball hanging down from the eaves of your home, the branches of trees, or even plastered along the sides of homes. The outer walls of the nest appear smooth and overlap one another with openings at various heights along these structures, creating caverns into the nest. These nests can be filled with hundreds or even thousands of inhabitants and, unfortunately, hornet attacks can be particularly vicious. Due to this, our technicians use specialized poles that can reach roughly 45-50 feet to treat the nests, allowing the technician to be safely outside of the direct proximity of the angry stingers. The top of these poles is designed to accommodate multiple attachments including brushes, foggers, aerosols, etc. For hornets, the pole is armed with fogger and pressed into the bottom of the nest before releasing the fog throughout. After about 20-30 minutes, most of the hornets should have expired from the treatment, and any remaining would be highly incapacitated and in the process of dying. At this time, the technician will manually remove the nest, secure it in a bag, and remove it from the property.

Fun Fact!!!  – If the hornets’ nest is particularly large, the technicians will often bring it into the office to show one another. They can even end up being a kind of trophy for the techs as they battle increasingly larger nests.
